Mallorca Training

The island of Mallorca really is the ideal spot for cyclists wanting to train in the warmth during the European winter months! Even the pro cyclists train here in Spring on the silky smooth roads and also take part in the prestigious Vuelta Mallorca race.
Splendid climate, breathtaking scenery and roads ideal for cycling make for an ideal week of training with your friends. You’ll be treated like pro riders and will share in the latest in training techniques, bike maintenance, dietary requirements, in fact anything and everything to do with the bike.
After a week of intense training you’ll return home in great shape for the upcoming season!

Program

Day One
Palma Warm-up Ride
Main Route: 40km – 25mi
Total Ascent: 300m – 990ft
This is a warm-up ride to ease the legs and body into it. Some of you may have only recently stepped off a plane, so this ride offers a great way to “tease” out that tiredness. The ride will take in some small climbs and offer views great views of the coastline

Day Two
Palma loop to Banyalbufar
Main Route: 80km – 50mi
Total Ascent: 1,600m – 5250ft
Our first day’s training ride is on undulating roads. After an easy warm up along the coast road, we move inland towards Calvià and Andratx. The second half of the ride is along stunningly panoramic roads and includes two climbs. We then head back down to the beautiful town of Palma.

Day Three
Palma loop to Deià
Main Route: 95km – 60mi
Total Ascent: 1900m – 6250ft
Today we spend most of our training on the climbs. A more difficult day with two different climbs. One long and gradual, and the other shorter and steep, also known as the “piccolo Stelvio” (the small Stelvio). Easy return ride to Palma.

Day Four
Palma to Alcudia
Main Route: 85km – 52mi
Total Ascent: 400m – 1300ft
After saying goodbye to the city of Palma, we transfer (by bike!) to Alcudia the second most important town of Mallorca. It’s a longish ride with many flat sections. An important training element for every cyclist.

Day Five
Alcudia loop to Petra
Main Route: 95km – 60mi
Total Ascent: 550m – 1650ft
After 4 days of fairly intense training, we have an active recovery ride. It’ll be a relaxed pace with not much elevation gain. Recovery is an important aspect of your training program. We’ll enjoy a beautiful ride on very quiet roads amongst olive and almond trees.

Day Six
Alcudia loop to Cap de Formentor
Main Route: 95km – 60mi
Total Ascent: 2,100m – 7500ft
It’s another spectacular day’s riding, where Mallorca reveals to us its true beauty, including the Cap de Formentor. Another training ride with a bit of everything, including some short but steep climbs which are ideal for changing your rhythm. Beware, we’ll do the same climbs in reverse on the way back!

Day Seven
Alcudia loop to Sa Calobra
Main Route: 115km – 71mi
Total Ascent: 2300m – 7550ft
… did we say the previous day was a ‘rest day?’, well, compared to this challenging and arguably most beautiful day of the tour it was! We start with a good warm up to Pollenca, then a series of ups and downs to the Monastery of S.LLuc. Be ready for a fantastic downhill to Sa Calobra. Of course we’ll have to climb what we’ve descended! But it’ll be a real satisfying achievement. The return to Alcudia doesn’t present any real difficulty. Congratulations you’ve done it. Time to celebrate in one of the wine bars and toast a great week of riding!
